For many years our church has sent a group of volunteers to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky. This year an adult mission trip is planned for October and the Mission Outreach Committee has slated this opportunity to serve as our June Mission of the Month.
Red Bird Mission and Clinic has been providing ministries to the region around the Appalachian Mountains since 1921. Today the need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strives to meet these needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health and Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity, and Community Housing Improvement.
Support for these ministries come from churches and individuals across the nation. Over the years the Mission has enjoyed wide support in The United Methodist Church as well as from other denominations. In recent years they have seen a decline in support. The team Salem sends to Red Bird helps on various projects such as providing home repair for low-income community residents and maintenance for Mission buildings and grounds.
Sponsors of this trip will help with the fees for the cost of each person’s lodging, meals, and materials used. Please consider helping to fund this important Mission Trip to work to help others in the name of God. You can write “Red Bird Mission Trip” on your giving envelope. Thank you.
The Mission of the month for July is ASTOP Sexual Assault Center SERVING FOND DU LAC, GREEN LAKE AND WAUSHARA COUNTIES.
ASTOP provides free counseling for children and adults and family members that have been sexually violated. They also provide prevention education to school children and provide assistance thru exams in the ER and assist in court cases.

Fifteen percent of these individuals are elementary age; nine percent are clients with developmental disabilities and the remaining are adult males and females. Twenty-one percent of the adults are affected family members. Adult, teen, and non-offending parent therapy groups are also offered.
If you are the victim of sexual assault, consider reporting the assault to your local police department, you don’t have to do it alone; Due to the sensitive nature of disclosing abuse, we have a Client Advocate available to answer your questions and accompany you so you don’t have to report alone. If sexual
Victims can present them selves to the Emergency Department of St. Agnes Hospital where, in collaboration with Agnesian HealthCare, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) gathered forensic evidence and completed an examination for injuries. ASTOP’s Client Advocate then assists the victim as their cases move through the legal system and makes referrals to other resources as necessary.
Prevention education is not only about decreasing the incidence of sexual abuse, it is also intervening when abuse has or is occurring. It also included the understanding that there needs to be “0” tolerance when it comes to sexual violence and that adults are responsible for the protection of children. We can’t take away all the risks that children face. We can give them the skills to feel safe. ASTOP works with the Schools to present programs and help with students.
